While we are concerned about the discovery of BSE in a single Holstein Dairy cow in Washington State, we would like our customers to know that we do not use and have never used products from Midway Meats, Interstate Meat, or Willamette. We have learned that presumptive positive testing came from a Holstein Dairy Cow. These cows are not utilized by Rastelli Foods. Cattle from Washington State represent only 1% of total domestic cattle and 0% of products purchased by Rastelli Foods. Please also note that BSE is not foot and mouth disease and is not highly contagious. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman issued a statement including the following quotes, that "The infectious tissues from an animal that has BSE – that is, the central nervous system tissues, the brain, spinal cord and so forth - of this animal did not enter the food supply. That's very important to know. There is virtually no chance that the meat has been contaminated. We believe that the risk of any kind of human health effect is extremely low. Muscle cuts of meat have almost no risk." "What we found, because of the actions that were taken both in Canada and in the United States with the case earlier this year, is that demand for beef did not diminish, partly because we believe that people in North America know that we have the strongest food-safety systems in the world; we have the protections in place. And again, I personally do not hesitate to recommend to anyone that beef is absolutely safe to eat." Whole muscle cuts have almost no risk of BSE and are 100% of what Rastelli produces. Rastelli also only uses whole muscle steer muscle for all portion cutting and grinding purposes. Rastelli Foods has separated itself from most meat manufacturers in the planning, development and completion of its new facility in Logan Township, New Jersey. We have been operating in our new facility since December 1, and invite you to visit us to see how we are raising the bar on manufacturing and quality standards with our state of the art building, quality control systems, and rigorous HACCP program. We are in business to serve our customers and to exceed their expectations. We wish all of you a wonderful Holiday and prosperous New Year.
